The oval photograph is protected beneath glass and surrounded by an elegant gilt metal frame embellished with delicate openwork scroll decoration. The combination of the intimate photographic portrait and ornamental frame gives the piece a particularly personal and evocative character. Mourning and memorial jewellery occupied an important place in Victorian society, serving as a tangible means of commemorating deceased relatives and loved ones.
