An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated French artist Paul Gavarni, from his celebrated satirical series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, Paris, and printed by Aubert & Cie, the series offers a sophisticated and often humorous examination of love, marriage, and domestic relationships among the nineteenth-century French bourgeoisie. This composition, Plate 12 of the series, depicts an intimate domestic moment in which a husband leans affectionately toward his wife as she sits quietly absorbed in thought. The scene is accompanied not by dialogue but by a reflective maxim: "Ce qui fait les qualités du mari qu'on aime fait les défauts du mari qu'on n'aime pas." Translated, it reads: "The very qualities that make the virtues of a husband one loves become the faults of a husband one does not love." Rather than presenting overt comedy, Gavarni offers a perceptive observation on the psychology of marriage. The print suggests that personal qualities are judged less by their objective nature than by the affection—or lack of affection—with which they are viewed. A husband's attentiveness, persistence, or familiarity may be interpreted as tenderness by a loving spouse, yet the same behaviour can become tiresome or objectionable where affection has faded. Gavarni thus reminds the viewer that happiness in marriage depends as much upon feeling and perception as upon character itself. Good overall condition, with a clear, well-preserved impression. The sheet displays light age toning, scattered foxing, faint handling marks, and several light vertical and horizontal fold lines visible throughout the paper. Minor surface soiling and slight discolouration are present, consistent with age and careful handling. The lithographic image remains crisp and well-defined with attractive tonal contrasts.
