Signed lower left D. P. Anker. In a dark inn, with the female figure of the innkeeper on the left visible, intent on filling a glass, two patrons are engaged in a game of chess, while a third observes them attentively. The light is focused on the players' table, the fulcrum of the scene. The painting is presented in a late 19th-century gilded frame. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
