Lithograph on paper, plate 16 from the Series "impressions de Ménage". An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated French artist Paul Gavarni, from his renowned satirical series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, Paris, and printed by Aubert & Cie, the series is among Gavarni's most successful explorations of bourgeois domestic life, blending humour with acute psychological observation. Titled Nocturne à deux nez ("Nocturne for Two Noses"), this charming composition depicts a husband and wife asleep beneath a shared coverlet within the intimacy of their bedroom. The playful subtitle, "(Deux tours à la clef.)" ("Two turns of the key"), alludes humorously to the privacy of the marital chamber, while the title itself gently teases the familiar reality of sharing a bed. Rather than presenting dramatic action, Gavarni finds comedy in the quiet routines of domestic existence, transforming an everyday nocturnal scene into an affectionate commentary on married life. Rendered with subtle tonal gradations and delicate lithographic handling, the composition demonstrates Gavarni's remarkable ability to evoke atmosphere and character with remarkable economy of line. The soft modelling of the bed linens contrasts beautifully with the darker interior and richly textured drapery, creating an intimate scene that balances tenderness with understated wit. Condition: Good overall condition, with a well-preserved impression. The sheet shows light age toning, scattered foxing, faint surface staining, and minor handling wear confined primarily to the margins, all consistent with age. The image remains clear, rich, and visually appealing. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
