Louis Bélanger After working as a landscape painter in various countries—including Italy, where he likely lived in Rome from 1780 to 1785—he returned to France, remaining there only briefly before the outbreak of the Revolution. Around 1790, he moved to London, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy and created works intended for engraving. Upon learning of opportunities for painters in Russia, he attempted to emigrate there via Finland but was thwarted by Russia's involvement in the war against France. He eventually settled in Stockholm in 1798, where he quickly established himself, becoming a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts and receiving an appointment as court painter. Working in both oil and gouache, he depicted subjects drawn from the places he had visited and became particularly renowned for his evocative scenes featuring rocky landscapes and waterfalls. See less
