Lithograph on paper, from the Series "Impressions de Ménage" (plate 14). An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated French artist Paul Gavarni, from his acclaimed series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, Paris, and printed by Aubert & Cie, the series is regarded as one of Gavarni's finest examinations of bourgeois domestic life, combining refined draughtsmanship with sharp social observation and understated humour. This engaging composition depicts a well-dressed husband reclining comfortably upon a sofa while his elegantly attired wife stands before him in animated reproach. The accompanying caption humorously accuses the husband of inventing excuses for avoiding dinner with his mother-in-law, poking fun at the familiar tensions between marriage, family obligations, and domestic diplomacy. Gavarni masterfully captures the imbalance of the exchange: the husband's relaxed posture contrasts with the wife's assertive gesture, conveying the subtle power dynamics of married life with wit and remarkable psychological insight. Executed with delicate tonal modelling and expressive lithographic line, the composition exemplifies Gavarni's extraordinary ability to elevate everyday domestic incidents into timeless studies of human character. Rather than relying on exaggerated caricature, the artist achieves his humour through natural gesture, social nuance, and keen observation. Condition: Good overall condition, with a clear, well-preserved impression. The sheet displays light age toning, scattered foxing, minor staining, and faint handling wear, primarily within the margins, consistent with age. The printed image remains crisp and visually appealing This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
