An exceptional dining set designed by marc held for ibm and manufactured by bessière in france in 1983, comprising a large dining table and six matching chairs.
the set was conceived specifically for ibm's headquarters in montpellier and is notable for its ingenious and original chair suspension system beneath the tabletop. Each seat incorporates a metal element that fits into pre-drilled openings in the table, allowing the chairs to be raised off the floor and facilitating cleaning. This functional solution is an integral part of the design and reflects held's characteristic rational and architectural approach. 1stdibs
the table features a large white laminated top with beech edges, cylindrical wooden legs, and black lacquered metal structural elements. The six chairs combine molded laminated wood and beech, with curved frames that create a distinctly sculptural presence, molded seats, and small, rounded backs.
production was extremely limited: only 60 tables and 300 chairs were made by the bessière cabinetmaking workshop in 1983, making the surviving complete sets rare. Gazette drouot
a prime example of 1980s french design, in which functionality, ergonomics, industrial production, and artisanal quality are integrated into a highly original solution.
it is in very good overall condition, with slight signs of use consistent with its age.
