Up for consideration is a striking mid-century vintage L.E. Smith Glass Company "Moon and Star" finger oil lamp in vibrant emerald green pressed glass. The pattern features deep relief thumbprint "moons" encircled by star points surrounding the rounded font, set atop a flared pedestal base detailed with fan/shell facets and molded stippling. The side is fitted with an integrated, heavy glass finger-loop handle for easy transport.
The lamp includes its solid brass collar, a period brass burner unit with shade-holder prongs and turn-knob wick advance mechanism, and a clear glass chimney with a beaded/scalloped top rim.
Historical Provenance & Design Significance: The "Moon and Star" pattern represents one of American glassmaking's most enduring motifs. Originally designed as "Palace" by Adams and Company in 1888, the design was revitalized in the mid-20th century by L.E. Smith Glass Company, who rendered it in lush, jewel-toned glass formulations. The combination of dramatic optical thumbprint geometry with traditional Americana forms gives this finger lamp a distinctive crossover appeal between Victorian nostalgia and Hollywood Regency glamour.
Aesthetic Appeal & Curator's Note: With its rich emerald green saturation and intricate relief pattern, this finger lamp serves as an exquisite accent piece for upscale traditional, rustic, or eclectic interiors. Designers can style it on a bookshelf, vanity, mantle, or bedside table to bring texture and pop of jewel-toned color. Illuminated by ambient light or function-lit with lamp oil, it anchors space with authentic mid-century warmth and sculptural depth.
