Fascinating World War II period tankard, personalised for Arthur David Townsend (1922–2017), stationed aboard HMS Verbena during the war until 1944, when he switched to HMS Springtide. The Verbena (Pennant K85) was a Flower-class Corvette, patrolling intense routes through the North Atlantic. Townsend spent the post war period as a director for the family shipping company that was founded by his father Captain Stuart Miller Townsend.

Appealing pint sized tankard with superb WWII provenance
Displays a desirable aged patina and in good original order
Polished pewter presents a fine appearance and metallic feel
Broad, square section handle a well-balanced, tactile fit

Engraved to the fascia for A.D. Townsend - HMS Verbena, 1943
Replete with a glass bottom, a maritime tradition to avoid taking the King's Shilling
In the days of press gang conscription, recruiters would drop a coin into a drinker's jug
The rationale behind the glass bottom would highlight the ruse, and avoid the contract

This is charming vintage WWII pint tankard, with superb historical and maritime interest. Personalised for posterity, this wonderful example has survived in appealing, original order. Delivered ready to enjoy or display.
