Adele Carolyn Morales Mailer ( 1925 - 2015 ) was an American painter, actress, memoirist. She studied painting under the Modernist master artist Hans Hofmann, studied literature at The New School for Social Research, and was known for her Abstract Expressionist paintings and her work in papier mache. She also performed at The Actor's Studio and was active in the New York art scene of the 1950's. While she is best known publicly for her marriage to writer Norman Mailer, she maintained an independent creative career throughout her life.
During her marriage with Mailer their New York East Village apartment became a popular salon for the New York intelligentsia, including Edwin Fancher and Dan Wolf who together with Norman, founded The Village Voice newspaper. Adele briefly had a romantic relationship witH Beat Generation writer Jack Kerouac in the 1940's before her marriage to Norman.
In 1960 Mailer stabbed Adele with a penknife after a party, nearly killing her. Morales made a physical recovery, and the two divorced in 1962. In 1997, she published a memoir of her marriage to Mailer titled The Last Party, which recounted the violence and its aftermath. After her death, her daughter Danielle explained that her mother Adele wanted to be remembered as a gifted painter and actress, and as a mother who was fiercely devoted to her two daughters.
