Its compact, faceted body features raised floral panels beneath a richly variegated glaze of turquoise, emerald, and deep green. The glaze pools within the relief decoration and flows irregularly toward the exposed buff-colored earthenware foot, creating wonderful depth and texture.

Jars of this general type were traditionally used to store and transport preserved foods and condiments, including ginger. Today, their sculptural forms and distinctive glazes make them appealing decorative objects.

This small example displays characteristic glaze crazing and color variations and is accompanied by a cork stopper of undetermined age. Particularly appealing on a bookshelf, mantel, or in a collection of antique Asian ceramics.
