The composition depicts two figures walking along a fenced country road beside still water. Trees, a rocky bank, distant hills, and a softly clouded sky create a layered rural scene. The painting is presented in a substantial gilt frame with molded ornament and acorn-and-leaf decoration at the corners. Close views show varied brushwork, from the small figures and fence posts to the textured foliage and rocks. The landscape subject and atmospheric treatment give the work a traditional American landscape character, although neither an artist nor a specific location is identified. The reverse shows the canvas, wooden stretcher, and hanging wire.
