A landscape oil painting on canvas in a Newcomb-Macklin Co. giltwood picture frame, identified by the maker’s label on the reverse. The work and frame are presented as Arts and Crafts period, circa 1920.
The painting depicts a blue lake beneath rolling hills and a distant mountain range, with three small figures in the foreground. Its muted earth tones and luminous sky are complemented by the frame’s molded profiles and restrained corner ornament.
A handwritten label on the reverse identifies the painting as “The Enchanted Lake” and names Howard B. Spencer. The inscription provides a useful attribution, although no signature is visible on the front. The reverse also shows the canvas, wooden stretcher, frame-maker’s label, and hanging wire. The Newcomb-Macklin label identifies the firm as picture-frame makers in New York.
