The thick planked top glows with a warm satin finish, its edges softened by generations of hands. Tapered oak battens beneath each end hold the boards true, a hallmark of the country joiner's craft. The apron houses a single wide drawer with a simple turned knob, framed by pegged mortise and tenon joinery above sturdy square legs.
Farm tables were the heart of the 18th century French country household, where bread was kneaded, meals were shared, and the work of the season was planned. Village joiners built them from local oak, favoring strength and straightforward construction handed down from master to apprentice. Sometime in the last hundred years, the legs were shortened to coffee table height, giving the sturdy oak frame a second life by the hearth.
The charm and character of farm tables exude the centuries of country life into modern interiors, bringing the beauty and a foundation in the charm of a country life. Placed before a linen upholstered sofa, the table brings warmth and depth to a contemporary living room, with a roomy drawer for books and everyday essentials. Its rich brown tone pairs beautifully with white plaster walls, limestone floors, and natural textiles, and the broad top welcomes stacks of books, a wooden bowl, or an armful of garden roses.
