This antique cabinet from Italy has a compact scale, measuring just over three feet in width (38.25 inches), and a distinctive architectural form designed for it to sit gracefully against a wall. The case features a faux marble painted top with same straight front with canted front corners as the main body below, creating a softened polygonal silhouette. The case houses a single door at front that opens to reveal an interior fitted with one fixed shelf, providing practical storage. Stacked molding defines the bottom of the cabinet which is raised on a conforming plinth base that echoes the canted profile and is finished with a shaped apron cutout at the center, lending the piece a refined provincial character. The cabinet retains an appealing layered painted surface, including both original and later paint with color notes in warm, muted tones of ochre, straw yellow, parchment, and honeyed beige, with a contrasting door border in weathered charcoal, smoky brown, and deep gray, creating a subtle faux-panel effect. The molded base and top are adorn in a faux-marble painted palette of olive green, moss, umber, brown, and charcoal-black veining. The hand-painted decoration has mellowed beautifully over time, developing the rich, timeworn surface. The painted surfaces show extensive and desirable age-related wear commensurate with age. There is a visible crack/separation in the top plank at the left side, where one board has settled slightly lower than the adjacent plank. This 19th century Italian demi console is an exceptionally versatile piece which would work beautifully in an entry hall beneath a mirror, as a living room accent cabinet for books and decorative objects, or as a bedside cabinet in a European-inspired bedroom. Its modest scale allows it to fit comfortably in smaller rooms, hallways, or landings where a larger case piece would overwhelm the setting. See less
