Lithograph on paper, from the Series "Impressions de Ménage", plate 35. An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated French artist Paul Gavarni, from his acclaimed satirical series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, Paris, and printed by Aubert & Cie, the series humorously examines the rituals, aspirations, and realities of bourgeois domestic life through Gavarni's keen powers of social observation. This plate, entitled Demande en Mariage ("Marriage Proposal"), depicts the delicate negotiations preceding a marriage. A young suitor confidently presents his proposal to the prospective bride's father or guardian, who regards him with measured scepticism. The scene captures the practical realities that often underlay nineteenth-century courtship, where marriage represented not only a romantic union but also a carefully weighed social and financial arrangement. A translation reads: "— Come now, neighbour, here's an idea! My mother is giving me her curiosity shop; give your daughter the café… and we'll simply cut a doorway through the dividing wall between the two businesses—what do you say? — That wouldn't work, my boy. Pamela likes things far too ornate, and you like everything far too small and plain." The humour rests on the father's witty observation that the couple are fundamentally incompatible. Rather than objecting to the proposal on financial or social grounds, he dismisses it because of their irreconcilable tastes: Pamela prefers elaborate Rococo extravagance, while the young man favours simplicity and restraint. Gavarni gently mocks the fashionable tendency to elevate matters of personal taste into insurmountable barriers to marriage, exposing the trivial concerns that can complicate otherwise sensible arrangements. Condition: Good overall condition, with a clear, well-preserved impression. The sheet displays light age toning, scattered foxing, faint handling marks, and minor edge wear consistent with age. The printed image remains crisp, with rich tonal variation characteristic of a strong nineteenth-century lithographic impression. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
