Lithograph on paper, from the series "impressions de ménage", plate 22. An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated french artist paul gavarni, from his celebrated satirical series impressions de ménage ("impressions of married life"). Published by chez panier, rue du croissant, paris, and printed by aubert & cie, the series humorously explores the realities of bourgeois domestic life, revealing the everyday negotiations and comic frustrations of marriage through gavarni's keen powers of observation. This plate humorously contrasts the divided responsibilities of husband and wife within the household. In the foreground, the husband labours over the kitchen stove, tending a kettle while clutching a pair of bellows, surrounded by cooking utensils and household implements. In the distant room, almost silhouetted by the light, his wife sits at the piano, absorbed in sentimental music rather than domestic duties. The printed heading reinforces the joke: "monsieur à la cuisine, madame au piano." ("the husband in the kitchen, the wife at the piano.") below follows an amusing exchange in which the wife's romantic song lyrics are repeatedly interrupted by the practical realities of the kitchen: "— vingt-cinq noms d'un petit bonhomme!\. — 'ce que l'âme ressent, un mot peut l'exprimer…' — adèle! voilà mon eau qui ne chauffera jamais! — 'un cœur ne veut qu'un cœur qui lui batte et lui réponde…' — adèle!\. Pas la moindre braise! — 'hélas! je ne sais rien… je ne sais que t'aimer…'" a translation reads: "— twenty-five names for a little fellow!\. — 'what the soul feels, a single word can express…' — adèle! my water will never boil! — 'a heart desires only another heart that beats in answer…' — adèle!\. There's not the slightest ember! — 'alas! i know nothing… except that i love you…'" the humour lies in the sharp contrast between romantic idealism and domestic reality. As the wife loses herself in sentimental music, the husband struggles with an uncooperative fire and repeatedly interrupts her lofty verses with increasingly desperate practical complaints. Gavarni gently satirises both the fashionable cult of romantic sentiment and the everyday burdens of household management, suggesting that idealised love often falters when confronted with mundane domestic responsibilities. The composition reinforces this comic divide. The husband occupies the brightly rendered foreground, surrounded by tangible household tasks, while the wife appears distant and almost dreamlike in the adjoining room. This physical separation mirrors their emotional disconnect, making the scene one of the most visually sophisticated domestic satires within the series. Good overall condition, with a clear, well-preserved impression. The sheet displays light age toning, scattered foxing, handling marks, and minor edge wear consistent with age. The printed image remains crisp, with rich tonal contrasts characteristic of a strong nineteenth-century lithographic impression. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
