Plate 26 from the Series "Imressions de Ménage". An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated French artist Paul Gavarni, from his renowned satirical series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Through keen observation and refined draughtsmanship, Gavarni brilliantly explored the realities of bourgeois domestic life, transforming everyday situations into sophisticated social commentary. Entitled Le Cabinet du Jurisconsulte (The Jurisconsult's Office), this composition depicts a young woman consulting a legal adviser regarding a petition for marital separation. Seated opposite the lawyer in a modest interior, she appears to present her grievances while holding what seems to be evidence of her domestic troubles. The printed dialogue beneath the image underscores Gavarni's characteristic wit: "And what evidence will you bring, Madam, in support of your petition for separation? These acts of violence of which you complain—how will you prove them before the courts?" "Sir, I have bruises everywhere!" The scene exemplifies Gavarni's ability to blend humour with pointed social observation, touching upon the legal and personal realities of nineteenth-century marriage while maintaining a tone of understated irony. Rather than overt caricature, the artist relies on expressive gesture, subtle facial expression, and carefully balanced composition to communicate both the emotional tension and comic undertone of the exchange.
