Plate 28 of the Series "Impressions de Ménage". An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated French artist Paul Gavarni, from his celebrated series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Renowned for his elegant draughtsmanship and perceptive observations of Parisian society, Gavarni masterfully combined refined figure drawing with subtle humour, producing some of the finest examples of French social lithography during the July Monarchy. This charming composition, entitled Un Nid dans un Bois (A Nest in the Woods), depicts a young couple reclining beneath the shade of a tree during a countryside excursion. The gentleman lies comfortably against a rustic chair while leaning toward his companion, who sits quietly beside him with her back turned to the viewer. The intimate setting, surrounded by gently rendered foliage and open landscape, evokes the romantic ideal of escape from urban life while gently satirising bourgeois notions of courtship and leisure. Executed with Gavarni's characteristic economy of line and delicate tonal modelling, the lithograph captures an atmosphere of quiet intimacy rather than overt caricature. The relaxed poses, understated expressions, and carefully balanced composition exemplify the artist's remarkable ability to transform ordinary moments into sophisticated social commentary. Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, 16, and printed by Aubert & Cie, this lithograph belongs to one of Gavarni's most admired series, celebrated for its nuanced depiction of nineteenth-century domestic relationships and fashionable Parisian life. Good overall condition, with a clear, well-preserved impression. The sheet exhibits light overall toning, scattered foxing, minor creasing, and handling wear consistent with age. Some marginal discolouration and faint staining are present, together with light paper undulation. The image remains strong and visually appealing.
