Lithograph on paper, from the Series "Impressiond de Ménage" (plate 11). An original nineteenth-century lithograph by the celebrated French artist Paul Gavarni, from his renowned satirical series Impressions de Ménage ("Impressions of Married Life"). Published by Chez Panier, Rue du Croissant, Paris, and printed by Aubert & Cie, the series offers a witty and insightful examination of marriage, family life, and bourgeois society in nineteenth-century France. This affectionate domestic scene depicts a husband and wife embracing while discussing a name for their newborn daughter. Beneath the image appears the dialogue: "— Comment appellerons nous notre petite fille ? — Léon ! — Charles, vous m'ennuyez beaucoup !" ("— What shall we call our little daughter? — Léon! — Charles, you are becoming very tiresome!") The humour rests in the father's absurd suggestion of giving a masculine name to their baby girl, prompting his wife's exasperated response. Gavarni gently satirises the playful banter and familiar disagreements that accompany married life, revealing his talent for transforming everyday domestic moments into scenes of enduring charm and wit. Rendered with delicate tonal modelling and fluid draughtsmanship, the composition conveys warmth and intimacy through relaxed poses and expressive gestures. The artist's economical yet highly observant style allows subtle emotional nuances to emerge naturally, making the scene both humorous and deeply human. Good overall condition, with a clear, well-preserved impression. The sheet displays light age toning, scattered foxing, faint handling creases, and minor edge wear consistent with age. The printed image retains strong tonal contrasts and excellent visual clarity. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
