Beneath the canopy, horse-drawn carriages and strolling figures are picked out in a few quick marks, with a woman and her small dog in the foreground. A signature and an inscription appear in the lower right corner. Paris has long been painted in watercolor, from the boulevards and parks to the quays of the Seine, and the medium suits the city’s soft, changeable light. This one dates to the year Paris was liberated, in August 1944. A sage-green mat sets the scene inside an ornate carved frame, whose floral relief and beaded edge carry an aged gilt and bronze finish.
