The paint is laid on in thick, confident strokes, and the olive and ochre ground glows around the objects. It is signed “L.R.” in the lower right corner. Still life has deep roots in the Low Countries, from the Flemish and Dutch masters of the 17th century, and Belgian painters of the early 1900s gave the tradition a modern voice, with looser brushwork and bolder color shaped by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. A dark wooden frame completes the picture. It would bring warmth and a sense of history to a dining room, kitchen or library. See less
