Richly colored and filled with expressive linework, the composition captures an extraordinary moment of movement, confusion, and destruction beneath an expansive, stormy sky.

At the center of the scene, a horse rises amid an overturned carriage, scattered wheels, and fragments of wreckage. Fiery passages of orange and yellow contrast with the deep blue, green, and gray tones of the surrounding countryside. Fine black lines sweep across the landscape, creating a sense of restless movement that carries through the sky, roadway, and central figures.

The composition combines recognizable rural imagery with abstracted forms and dramatic perspective, reflecting the influence of Surrealism on Ferguson’s work. Its intricate detail and atmospheric color give the scene a striking visual presence.

Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, Ferguson studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and in Paris. He exhibited regularly during the 1930s and 1940s and became known for his imaginative compositions and watercolor painting.
