The exterior is adorned with an intricate, multi-colored design featuring pink peony blossoms, blue and pink butterflies, and scrolling green vines with leaves, all rendered in bright enamel. The top is fitted with a domed, gilt-bronze lid pierced with a delicate, openwork lattice pattern. A bronze swing handle is attached to the sides, and the piece rests on a flat, gilt-bronze base.
