An original vintage black-and-white charcoal portrait drawing by Oklahoma artist and commercial illustrator Donna Foreman Hopper, sourced directly from her estate in Norman, Oklahoma. The work depicts a woman with short dark hair and wispy bangs, her face turned slightly to the viewer’s right.
Strongly defined eyes, sculptural cheekbones, and softly shaded lips give this female portrait a thoughtful, poised expression. Deep charcoal shadows contrast with highlights across the face and neck, while loosely drawn shoulders and a softly worked background preserve the immediacy of the artist’s hand. A small artist’s monogram appears beside the neckline.
An additional unfinished female portrait study appears on the reverse, offering an engaging glimpse into Hopper’s drawing process. Together, the two studies make this an appealing work for collectors of original portrait drawings, American illustration, and vintage works on paper.
Hopper majored in art at Oklahoma State University and studied under Doel Reed. Her subsequent career included illustration for Hallmark, fashion artwork for TG&Y, and commercial work for advertising agencies.
The portrait’s black-and-white palette works beautifully in both traditional and modern interiors. Pair it with a generous ivory mat and a slender antique gilt frame for a collected look, or choose walnut or black for a quieter presentation. It would make a distinctive addition above a writing desk, beside a dressing table, or within a gallery wall of drawings and photographs.
