The bust is hand-formed from layered papier-maché, then coated in a texture yellow finish with a a mottled black wash that enhances its sculptural depth and age. Facial features are subtly defined -narrow eyes, a long straight nose, and closed lips-giving the piece a serene, contemplative expression.
A hand-incised motif circles the crown, resembling coiled or stylized hair beneath a headband or cap, adding to the object's enigmatic quality. The form sits atop a simple rod mounted into a rustic, hand-cut wooden plinth, grounding the piece with industrial contrast. The base of the sculpture reveals remnants of old printed paper and rough backing, consistent with traditional papier-mâché construction methods, suggesting it may have originated as a studio maquette, display figure, or folk art object.
Likely dating from the mid-20th century, this head is both raw and refined-a tactile, visually engaging work suited for collectors of outsider art, studio sculpture, or unusual decorative accents.Stable with intentional surface texture and some minor wear consistent with age. Exposed paper backing visible underneath.
Vintage condition as pictured.
