A wonderful antique hand-coiled rye straw basket found in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, made in the 19th century. Tight bundles of rye straw are coiled and bound with split-wood wrapping, which gives the basket its distinctive ribbed texture. The bowl-shaped form is slightly irregular, with a stepped foot ring, and it has a deep, dark patina from generations of use.

These baskets were made on Pennsylvania farms for everyday use, holding bread dough, eggs, fruit, and vegetables. Today it makes a lovely bowl on a table, shelf, or console, and it suits a folk art collection or a rustic, organic interior.

Condition: Wear and losses consistent with age, including losses to the straw coils and split wrapping, particularly at the rim and foot.
