If you love bringing authentic history and artistry into your home, this piece is truly special. This is a monumental, hand-painted Japanese Arita porcelain umbrella and cane stand crafted by the world-renowned Fukagawa Seiji (深川製磁) workshop. It dates beautifully to the late Meiji or early Taishō period (circa 1895–1920).
Unlike more common, mass-produced mid-century commercial pieces that feature a simple stamped blue factory logo, this rare, museum-quality export piece features the highly desirable, authentic hand-painted iron-red kanji characters on its base: 棚 / 深川製 (Tana / Fukagawa Sei), which translates directly to "Stand — Made by Fukagawa." These handwritten marks were strictly reserved for high-end studio commissions and grand statement pieces destined for prominent Western homes at the turn of the century.
Artistry & Design Features:
• The Body: A striking, rich dark matte famille noire background that makes the decoration instantly pop. It features masterfully rendered, raised white and pink bamboo stalks, vibrant orange-red chrysanthemums, and a soaring songbird.
• The Borders: The upper and lower bands display gorgeous, intricate aka-e (iron-red) and cobalt blue Imari geometric designs. Look closely at the top collar—it showcases a meticulously hand-gilded diamond grid enclosing the traditional Buddhist manji (swastika) motif, a classical Asian symbol representing longevity, good fortune, and auspiciousness.
• The Hardware: Flanking the sides are two stunning, three-dimensional high-relief molded white porcelain lion-mask handles (shishi), complete with their original fine gold-gilt highlights.
Dimensions & Presence:
This piece features a thick-walled, heavy potting designed to remain safely bottom-heavy so it won't tip over when filled with walking sticks or umbrellas.
• Height: 24.5 inches
• Opening Rim Diameter: 8.5 inches
• Estimated Weight: 15–20 lbs (unpacked)

This stand has been beautifully preserved over the last century. There are no structural cracks, chips, repairs, or deep spider hairlines. It shows only the most charming, minor age-appropriate wear to the hand-gilded gold accents along the upper lip and handles, and some typical light shelf wear on the unglazed foot ring. The interior is clean, solid, and completely stable. less
