Antique Pennsylvania Grain-Painted Empire Chest of Drawers, Circa 1850s
A bold antique Pennsylvania Empire chest of drawers, grain-painted to imitate flame mahogany, circa 1850s. The drawer fronts are painted in swirling red-orange mahogany graining. Striped graining on the stiles, scrolled front pilasters, and drawer dividers adds contrast and movement. The overhanging top drawer has a raised, beveled panel, and three full-width drawers sit below it. The chest stands on turned feet.
It is built of poplar and pine with dovetailed drawers, and the drawers are fitted with white porcelain knobs. The graining is lively and skillfully done, and the warm red-orange tones give the piece great presence in a bedroom, hall, or dining room.
