This is a finely cast antique fire-gilded bronze statue of Vajrasattva, the primordial Buddha and central deity in Vajrayana Buddhism representing purification and the primordial state of enlightenment. The figure is seated in the full lotus position (padmasana) upon a double-lotus base, with a small prostrate figure or vajra resting beneath the lotus platform.
Vajrasattva is depicted with a serene and gentle expression, downcast eyes, and a slight smile. He wears an elaborate, pierced crown, large circular earrings, and layered beaded necklaces. The hands are held in a specific mudra, with the right hand holding a vajra (dorje) at the heart and the left hand holding a bell (ghanta) resting on the lap. The figure is adorned with flowing celestial scarves that drape gracefully over the shoulders and curl into stylized flourishes at the sides.
The bronze features a rich, dark patina with significant remnants of original fire-gilding (mercury gilding) on the face, chest, and arms, creating a striking contrast against the darker, oxidized metal of the robes and base. The detailed repoussé and engraved work on the lotus petals and garments is clearly visible. This is a substantial and spiritually significant piece, perfect for a collector of Himalayan art or as a serene focal point in a curated space.
