This is a finely cast vintage gilt-bronze statue of Ksitigarbha (also known as Earth Store Bodhisattva), a revered figure in Mahayana Buddhism who vowed to save all beings from suffering and to delay his own Buddhahood until the hells are emptied. The figure is seated in the full lotus position (padmasana) upon a double-lotus base.
Ksitigarbha is depicted with a serene and gentle expression, downcast eyes, a gentle smile, and a red urna (dot) between his eyebrows. He wears an elaborate, pierced crown, large circular earrings, and layered beaded necklaces. His right hand is extended over his knee, holding a wish-fulfilling jewel (cintamani), a symbol of his ability to grant the wishes of sentient beings. His left hand rests in his lap, cradling a lotus bud. The figure is adorned with flowing celestial scarves that curl into stylized, cloud-like flourishes at the base.
The bronze features a rich, heavy gilding with a warm, polished patina, and darker copper tones showing through in the recesses, highlighting the intricate repoussé and engraved details. The base is sealed with a copper plate (visible in the bottom photo), a traditional feature in Himalayan Buddhist art. This is a substantial, elegant, and spiritually significant piece perfect for a collector of Asian antiques or as a peaceful focal point in a curated space.
