This is an exquisite antique gilt-bronze statue of Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. The figure is masterfully cast with high-relief repoussé and engraving techniques, featuring a rich, bright gilded surface that is beautifully accented with vibrant painted polychrome details in red, green, and blue.
The deity is seated in the full lotus position (padmasana) upon a double-lotus base. The right hand is raised high, wielding a flaming sword that symbolizes the cutting of ignorance and delusion. The left hand is held in front of the chest in a teaching mudra (vitarka mudra), while gracefully holding the stem of a lotus flower that blossoms at shoulder level, supporting the Prajnaparamita sutra. The figure wears an elaborate, pierced crown, large circular silver-inlaid earrings, and layered beaded necklaces. The face displays a serene and meditative expression with downcast eyes and a gentle smile. The flowing ribbons and celestial scarves are painted in striking red, adding a dynamic sense of movement.
The base retains its original consecration seal (visible in the bottom photo), a traditional feature in Himalayan Buddhist art. This is a highly decorative and spiritually significant piece, perfect for a collector of Asian antiques or as a focal point in a curated, tranquil space.
