An intricately decorated Japanese bronze vase bringing together a Mount Fuji landscape, a dramatic figural dragon scene and flowing phoenix ornament. Identified in its estate catalogue as a nineteenth-century Meiji-period bronze, this sculptural piece combines a dark patinated surface with warm gold-toned highlights and detailed relief work.
Two elongated pictorial panels, enclosed by raised scalloped borders, anchor the composition. One presents Mount Fuji above bands of mist and water, with small boats, a tree and a diminutive figure below. The reverse depicts an elaborately robed musician above a coiling dragon, likely representing Benzaiten, also known as Benten, the Japanese goddess associated with music and good fortune.
The metalwork rewards close viewing: geometric and floral patterns articulate the robes, individual scales define the dragon’s body, and long-tailed phoenix-like birds sweep down the sides between the panels. Floral branches encircle the neck, while finely textured passages alternate with smooth, cloud-shaped areas across the surrounding surface. A broad shoulder, tapering body and slightly flared mouth give the vase a balanced architectural silhouette.
Historical Context & Craftsmanship
The Meiji era, meaning “enlightened rule,” spanned 1868–1912. During this period, Japanese decorative arts gained international recognition through expanding trade and major exhibitions. Metalworkers drew upon established traditions of casting, carving, chasing, inlay and surface finishing to create elaborate vases and other display objects.
Some artisans brought skills developed in the production of sword fittings to these larger decorative works. Period vessels could incorporate separately formed and joined components, with detailed ornament refined through several stages of handwork.
This vase reflects that decorative tradition through its pictorial relief, intricate surface patterns and contrasting finishes. Mount Fuji carries longstanding associations with Japan’s sacred landscape, while the phoenix-like birds introduce auspicious imagery. Together, the scenes create a richly layered composition intended to be appreciated from multiple viewpoints.
Designer Notes
At 9½ inches tall, the vase offers sculptural detail without overwhelming a tabletop or shelf. Its dark finish and warm metallic accents complement mahogany, walnut, lacquer, aged brass and patterned textiles.
Display it on a library console, mantel or open étagère, allowing space around the piece so its silhouette and relief remain visible. The opposing scenes offer two distinct presentations: a quiet landscape or a more animated figural composition. Particularly suited to collected traditional interiors, Japanese art displays and rooms layered with Asian antiques.
Provenance & Attribution
Acquired from an estate, where it was catalogued as an antique Japanese Meiji bronze vase with high-relief decoration and a Mount Fuji landscape, circa nineteenth century. Maker unidentified; no legible maker’s mark observed.
