An elegant pair of early 19th-century Italian Empire commodini distinguished by their unusually tall, slender proportions and beautifully figured walnut veneers. Measuring 34.5 inches in height and just 16.5 inches in width, the cabinets have a graceful, architectural presence, with long, tapered legs accounting for nearly a third of their overall height.
This identical, facing pair features richly figured walnut fronts with striking symmetrical grain patterns, framed by slender ebonized columns with gilt capitals. Each cabinet is fitted with a single upper drawer above a paneled cabinet door, retaining its original brass hardware and functioning drawer lock with key. The elevated cases rest on elegant 12.75-inch tapered legs accented with ebonized decorative elements, lending the pair a particularly light and refined silhouette.
The warm walnut surfaces display a lovely aged patina, complemented by the contrasting ebonized details. The cabinet interiors have been lined in a charming brown-and-cream fleur-de-lis patterned paper.
With their distinctive height, narrow footprint, and restrained Empire detailing, these commodini offer an appealing alternative to conventional bedside tables. Their elegant proportions make them equally suited to flanking a sofa or serving as occasional cabinets in a living room.
Italian, circa 1820–1840. Sold as a pair.
