A tall and elegant 18th-century Italian Baroque giltwood altar candlestick, later converted to a table lamp. This beautifully carved example features an exuberant tripartite base with scrolling volutes, floral motifs, and architectural detailing, rising to a slender baluster-form stem embellished with acanthus leaves and classical ornamentation.
The richly carved surface appears to retain its original water gilding, displaying a wonderful combination of luminous gold highlights, exposed bole, and the mellow patina acquired over centuries. The contrast between the reflective gilded surfaces and darker recesses beautifully accentuates the depth and movement of the carving.
Originally fashioned as an ecclesiastical candlestick, the piece has been adapted for use as a table lamp, preserving its sculptural character and historic charm. The lamp has been professionally rewired.
A striking decorative accent with wonderful architectural presence, equally suited to traditional and contemporary interiors.
Italian, circa 18th Century.
Shown with a neutral linen drum shade; it measures 14.5” tall x 19.25” diameter.
Overall lamp height is 56” and 42” to the top of the lamp socket. The base diameter is 10”.
Good antique condition consistent with age and use. The giltwood retains a beautiful, timeworn surface with areas of rubbing, exposed bole, minor losses to the gilding and gesso, and age-related cracks. Scattered chips and losses to the carved decoration, particularly along the lower extremities of the base, as photographed. These imperfections are consistent with the age of the piece and contribute to its authentic character. Previously converted from an altar candlestick to a table lamp and subsequently rewired.
