A vast, clouded sky fills most of the canvas, and beneath it a small stretch of rocky shore meets the incoming waves. The scene is given entirely to weather, water, and stone, and it leaves a feeling of solitude and calm reflection.
Kerckx captures the coast at a moment of change, as the clouds begin to part and a soft light gathers along the horizon. Waves break white over the dark rocks, which stand firm as they have for centuries. Painted in silvery grays and deep earth tones, with the surf laid on thickly so it catches the light, the painting conveys the timeless rhythm of the sea and the stillness that follows a storm.
Kerckx, born in 1921, belongs to the generation of European painters who came of age after the Second World War. Her coastal view continues the northern European seascape tradition, where weather and light carry the emotion of a painting, expressed here with the freedom and directness of the mid 20th century.
Presented in a modern metal frame in pewter tones that echoes the cool palette of the canvas, the painting brings depth and stillness to contemporary interiors. Its grays sit easily with linen, stone, plaster walls, and natural wood. It hangs beautifully above a console, sofa, or bed, or in a study or library where it can be enjoyed at leisure.
Mid to late 20th Century.
