Description
An atmospheric antique Italian landscape combining the spectacle of an erupting volcano with the elegance of traditional Mediterranean maritime painting.
Mount Vesuvius dominates the background, its dark volcanic slopes illuminated by warm pinkish and orange tones.
A substantial plume of yellow, grey and orange smoke rises from the summit, contrasting with the surrounding blue sky.
In the foreground, several traditional sailing vessels cross the Bay of Naples.
Their pale sails, dark hulls and fine rigging are carefully distinguished against the water, while distant coastal buildings and a green hillside provide additional landscape interest.
The composition captures the historic appeal of southern Italy, a region celebrated by generations of Grand Tour travellers.
Its subject and intimate scale make it particularly suited to a traditional library, study, collected living room or carefully curated gallery wall.

**Historical and Artistic Context**
The volcanic landscapes of Naples occupied a distinctive place in the artistic culture of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Travellers visiting southern Italy encountered an extraordinary combination of classical ruins, Mediterranean scenery and the dramatic natural spectacle of Mount Vesuvius.
Artists of the Neapolitan School developed a tradition of painting volcanic subjects in gouache, producing richly coloured views admired by international collectors.
The present painting reflects this tradition through its dramatic volcanic plume, illuminated mountain slopes and picturesque sailing vessels.
**In the Manner of Camillo de Vito**
Camillo de Vito (1794–1845) was associated with gouache paintings depicting Mount Vesuvius and its historic eruptions.
The present work demonstrates stylistic affinities with this artistic tradition, particularly in its panoramic coastal setting, volcanic illumination and historical inscription.
It is catalogued in the manner of Camillo de Vito, indicating stylistic resemblance rather than confirmed authorship.
The painter has not been conclusively identified.
**The Inscription**
The painting bears the inscription *Eruzione del 1844*, meaning *Eruption of 1844*.
The inscription identifies the volcanic event represented but does not independently establish the precise date of execution.
The work is therefore catalogued as 19th century.
**Historical Auction Identification**
The painting was previously described by Halls Fine Art as depicting Mount Etna.
Subsequent comparative research supports Mount Vesuvius as the more convincing identification.
The earlier auction description remains part of the artwork's documented catalogue history.

The gouache retains attractive colour and clearly defined details throughout the volcanic landscape, eruption plume, sailing vessels and coastline. Close examination reveals scattered historic spotting, localised discolouration, fine pale horizontal lines and small areas of pigment loss. Sky and Background Minor surface marks, small discoloured spots and fine linear disturbances are visible in portions of the blue sky. Some horizontal marks may represent historic creasing, abrasion or cracking within the painted surface or paper support. Their precise nature has not been independently established. Volcanic Landscape Small pale interruptions, fine linear wear and minor surface irregularities are present along portions of the mountain slopes. Eruption Plume The principal plume retains strong yellow, orange and grey colouring, with minor speckling and age-related irregularities. Maritime Foreground The sailing vessels, rigging, hulls and reflections remain clearly defined, with minor scattered marks and surface wear. Paper and Support The paper has not been removed from its mount for examination. The condition of concealed areas and the reverse of the support, together with the presence or extent of earlier conservation or retouching, remains undetermined. Frame and Glazing Newly professionally framed in September 2026 with Tru Vue Museum Glass. The historic surface characteristics described above are present on the original artwork rather than the new glazing. Overall Assessment The painting retains its atmospheric character and decorative appeal. Its age-related characteristics are disclosed as part of its antique condition. Presented ready for display.
