Enhance your collection with this exceptional antique Chinese carved bamboo brush pot (bitong), dating from the Late Qing Dynasty to Early Republic period (circa late 19th to early 20th century).
Beautifully hand-carved from a single section of natural bamboo culm, this piece showcases a deeply layered, high-relief three-dimensional landscape complete with traditional pavilions, jagged mountain peaks, a shining sun, and classic pine trees.
The reverse side features elegant, hand-carved vertical calligraphy that reads “仿子谷道人筆意” (In imitation of the brushwork and concept of Master Zigu) alongside artist seals. Crucially, it bears a highly personal, custom scholar-to-scholar dedication: “廣川仁兄大人雅正” (For the elegant correction of my esteemed brother Guangchuan), proving this was a custom literary gift between peers rather than mass-produced trade ware. It stands 5.5 inches tall with an organic oval opening measuring approximately 3.5 inches by 4 inches. A magnificent addition to any Asian art, scholar’s desk, or decorative object collection.

The bamboo body features prominent, natural vertical drying splits/shrinkage cracks extending through the calligraphy and into the reverse landscape. These stable cracks are structurally sound and highly characteristic of genuine aged hollow-core bamboo. The rim and base display organic smoothing, minor surface scuffs, and expected dust accumulation within the deep carvings consistent with over a century of desk use. No modern repairs or restorations. less
