This striking gilt bronze sculpture depicts Kui Xing, the traditional deity of examinations and literature. The figure is shown in a dynamic, dancing pose with one leg raised, holding a writing brush aloft in his right hand and a stylized vessel or ingot in his left. He has a fierce, expressive face with bulging eyes, a thick black beard, and flowing robes detailed with red accents. He stands atop the head of a mythical dragon-turtle (Ao), which emerges from swirling waves, its mouth open and eyes wide. The sculpture is a fine example of traditional decorative art, capturing movement and character through detailed casting and gilding.
