An extraordinary original engraving by renowned French printmaker Philippe Mohlitz (1941–2019), titled La Noyée du Canal (The Drowned Woman of the Canal), created in 1972. This is hand-signed and dated in pencil by the artist and numbered 54/60 from a limited edition of just 60 impressions.
The composition depicts a mysterious canal landscape beneath a dramatically swirling sky. Delicate, leafless trees rise above the dark water, while weathered wooden posts and small figures populate the shadowy shoreline. Mohlitz's intricate linework creates a remarkable atmosphere, balancing the delicacy of the distant landscape with the dramatic darkness of the foreground.
Celebrated for his mastery of traditional copper engraving, Mohlitz developed a distinctive visual language combining surrealism, fantasy, and extraordinary technical precision. His imaginary landscapes are filled with unexpected details and enigmatic narratives, inviting viewers to discover the extraordinary within seemingly familiar settings.
This particular engraving is documented in the artist's catalogue raisonné as Kersten 47. Its limited edition of 60 and early 1972 date make it a compelling example of Mohlitz's mature printmaking.
The artwork is presented beneath a light-colored fabric-textured mat with a fine dark inner border, enclosed in a slender silver-tone metal frame. The neutral presentation complements the intricate black-and-white composition.
