This expressive female portrait on textured cream paper features sculpted curls, a distinctive forehead curl, and a scarf tied at the neckline.

Rich charcoal shading defines the sitter’s hair, eyes, and facial features, while loosely drawn shoulders lend the composition the immediacy of a studio portrait study. Her composed gaze and carefully styled hair evoke the glamour of mid-century fashion illustration.

A smaller portrait sketch and a separate eye study occupy the upper-right corner of the same sheet. These additional drawings offer a glimpse into the artist’s process and give the work particular appeal as a collected studio piece. A stylized monogram appears beside the sitter’s shoulder.

Donna Foreman Hopper studied art at Oklahoma State University under Doel Reed. Her professional career included illustration for Hallmark, fashion advertising for TG&Y, and subsequent work for advertising agencies.

This original drawing on paper would make an elegant addition to a collection of vintage portrait drawings, American illustration, or monochrome figurative art. Display it above a writing desk, on a bedroom gallery wall, or alongside complementary female portraits. An antiqued gilt frame would emphasize its period character; a slim black frame and generous ivory mat would offer a tailored presentation.

Provenance: Sourced directly from the artist’s estate in Norman, Oklahoma.

Condition: Visible paper toning, scattered surface marks and charcoal smudging, handling creases, and uneven edges with small tears and nicks. The upper edge shows pronounced curling and folded corners. Charcoal transfer and additional surface marks are visible on the reverse.
