Originally made as a cast iron stove urn, or humidifier, designed to hold water near the heat of a parlor stove so it could slowly evaporate into the room. Circa mid 19th century. Today, its sculptural form works beautifully repurposed as a planter. Has an unusually sculptural scalloped design and beautifully aged original painted finish. The deep relief gives the entire piece an almost shell-like or folded architectural quality, with the decoration continuing down through the pedestal base. Very heavy.
The old cream enameled surface has worn naturally and the iron has oxidized over time, leaving a mottled finish that gives it much more character than a repainted example.
The ornate form has a strong Rococo Revival influence and is reminiscent of French cast iron garden pieces. A great piece for an indoor garden, mantel, table or collection of antique architectural and garden objects.
Condition:
Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear throughout. The original enamel painted surface shows considerable natural variation, rubbing, oxidation, discoloration and minor areas of paint loss, particularly around the rim and base. This weathered surface is part of the character of the piece and has not been refinished.
Approximate measurements:
6.5" tall, 7.75" wide, 4.75" deep
