This exquisite late 19th-century French encrier de voyage (travelling pocket inkwell) is an exceptional showcase of Napoleon III craftsmanship, marrying late-Victorian naturalism with early industrial luxury. Distinctly rare for the period, the outer casing is constructed entirely from lightweight aluminium - a metal considered highly exotic, costly and technologically advanced during the late 1800s. This exterior features a matte-black painted finish, delicately hand-detailed with elegant silver-white festoon and floral swag motifs. The true centrepiece is the lid, decorated with an intricate, geometric spider web ensnaring two flies, crowned by a high-relief, three-dimensional spider. Insect and arachnid motifs were wildly popular during this era, symbolizing patience, destiny and the organic transitions into the Art Nouveau movement.
Ingeniously engineered for utility and maintenance, the outer decorative aluminium liner on the lid is fully detachable, It features an integrated notch cut-out that slides perfectly over the heavy brass rear hinge, allowing the outer shell to be slipped off to expose the brilliant solid brass lid core underneath. Proving its hand-fitted artisan origins, the inner rim of this aluminium liner bears a faintly hand-stamped workshop assembly number "23".
Inside, the central brass push-button opens the protective shell to reveal a highly sophisticated, spring-loaded internal brass cap mechanism. Designed to create a completely airtight seal against an inner pad, it safely kept ink from leaking into a gentleman's/ladies coat pocket or travel writing box.
Hidden entirely within the lower raw cavity is its original, thick-walled clear glass ink bottle - an element that is nearly always lost or broken over time. The bottom floor of this cavity is stamped with a production batch mark "5" and again shows authentic, beautiful historical rubbing and oxidation where the glass bottle has rested for over a century, guaranteeing all technical layers of this modular object are entirely organic to one another.
A remarkably well-preserved, fully functioning, and uniquely documented historical artefact, this inkwell serves as a striking decorative desk accessory or a premier addition to any collection of writing antiques or curiosities. This piece has an attribution mark,
