Vintage british mechanical nautical log by thomas walker & son ltd., birmingham, model walker’s “excelsior” iv patent log.
originally designed for yachts, motor launches and fishing craft, this instrument was used to measure the distance travelled by a vessel through the water.
the instrument is presented in its original dovetailed wooden case, retaining the manufacturer’s period instruction label inside the lid.
the set comprises the excelsior iv register with brass bezel and white dial, mounting mechanism, bronze/brass rotator, braided log line and associated fittings and accessories. A round replacement glass is also preserved with the set.
the combination of aged timber, patinated brass and bronze, dark metal and natural rope gives the piece a particularly attractive sculptural and authentic maritime character.
