Etching and aquantint on paper. Hand signed and numbered. Edition of 80. A refined original aquatint by the French printmaker Jacques Ramondot, depicting a simple rustic loaf of bread pierced by a kitchen knife. Titled La Petite Miche, the composition transforms an ordinary domestic subject into an image of striking formal elegance and quiet symbolism. Rendered against a deep, velvety background, the humble loaf emerges as a monumental object, its tactile surface and softly modelled form contrasting with the crisp verticality of the knife blade. The restrained arrangement recalls the traditions of French still-life painting while embracing the contemplative simplicity of modern printmaking. Executed with exceptional mastery of the aquatint process, the print is characterised by rich tonal gradations and an atmospheric interplay of light and shadow. Ramondot exploits the medium's ability to produce subtle, almost painterly textures, allowing the dense black ground to envelop the composition while illuminating the bread with remarkable sensitivity. The careful balance between tonal richness and graphic clarity demonstrates the artist's command of intaglio techniques and his refined sense of composition. Although rooted in the long tradition of the nature morte, La Petite Miche moves beyond straightforward representation. Bread, one of the most enduring symbols of nourishment, labour, and communal life, assumes an almost sculptural presence. The inserted knife introduces a quiet tension, suggesting themes of sustenance, sacrifice, and the transformation of everyday objects into poetic symbols. This understated symbolism, coupled with the work's meditative atmosphere, reflects the influence of twentieth-century French realism and the enduring legacy of artists such as Giorgio Morandi in elevating humble domestic objects to subjects of profound aesthetic contemplation. Very good overall condition with a fresh, richly inked impression. The sheet is clean and well preserved, with full margins. Minor handling wear consistent with age and previous framing. Signed in pencil by the artist and numbered 61/80. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
