A decorative terracotta sculpture created by the Italian artist Clizia, pseudonym of Mario Giani, active in the field of Italian artistic ceramics in the late 20th century. The work, titled "Lady," features a highly stylized female figure, with compact volumes, textured surfaces, and engraved geometric decorations.
The sculpture is crafted from hand-molded and hand-crafted terracotta, finished in natural clay tones of beige, gray, and reddish-brown. The deliberately irregular surface, incisions, and applied elements highlight the artisanal nature of the production process and make each piece visually expressive.
The formal language recalls post-World War II Italian modernist sculpture, with influences that combine archaic figuration, geometric research, and ceramic experimentation. The figure of the lady is reduced to essential and symbolic forms, with particular attention to texture and the relationship between solids and voids.
Mario Giani, an Italian artist, began working in ceramics and the applied arts in the 1950s. In 1955, he founded his own ceramics workshop in Turin and, over the course of his career, developed a body of work that included ceramics, painting, jewelry, set design, and illustration. He was also active in teaching ceramics and participated in the vibrant art scene of Bussana Vecchia, an important international center for artists and artisans.
The work is numbered 10/100 and is accompanied by an original certificate of authenticity, which bears the title "Dama," the edition number, and Clizia's signature. Original biographical documentation on the artist is also included. This piece has an attribution mark,
