This extraordinary pair of monumental Chinese censers (incense burners) is crafted from bronze with extensive gold (gilt) inlay and a rich, dark patina. Each vessel is designed in a double-gourd (hulu) form, a traditional Chinese symbol for good fortune and longevity.
The body and upper sections feature intricate openwork (reticulated) carving with geometric patterns, while the lower bulbous section is adorned with cast Taotie (mask) motifs and stylized scrolling designs.
The censers are flanked by elaborate, sculptural handles shaped like sinuous dragons. They are supported by three legs and feature inscriptions in relief. This impressive matching pair is a masterpiece of traditional Chinese metalwork and a distinguished addition to any collection of Asian antiques or significant decorative arts.
