DESCRIPTION
A seven-piece liquor set in deep burgundy glass: one tapered, bell-shaped decanter with a stopper and six matching shot glasses. A band of raised gold scrollwork, heavily textured like gold paste, circles each piece and is set with small round red glass cabochons that read as jewels. Gold bands finish the decanter neck, the foot and the rim of each glass, and the stopper has a gilded top.
WORTH NOTING
Seven pieces: one decanter with stopper and six shot or cordial glasses, all in the same design.
Glass: deep burgundy that shows a purple-red tone at the thin rims.
Decoration: a raised gold scroll and floral band, with finer gilt foliage above and below it, applied to every piece.
Applied red glass cabochons are spaced around the gold band on the decanter and on each glass.
Gold banding at the decanter neck, base ring, glass rims and glass feet; stopper has a gilded top and a frosted ground stem.
Unsigned, with no maker mark seen; the look is in the Bohemian and Venetian gilt-glass tradition, and no maker or country is claimed.
Era: circa 1950s-1970s, dated by the gilt-and-jeweled glass style; no narrower date could be established.
MEASUREMENTS
Decanter approx. 9 in tall with the stopper. Shot glasses approx. 2.75 in tall and about 2 in across the rim. Estimated from photographs; capacity not stated.
FROM THE HOUSE
This is a set made for display as much as for pouring: the gold is heaped up in relief, so the surface glitters even in the dim light of a cabinet, and the little red cabochons sit like stones in a setting. The deep burgundy gives the gold a dark ground to work against, which is why it looks so rich at a distance.
Fill the decanter with a sweet liqueur or port and put it on a tray with the six glasses for a holiday table, or leave it dry as a cabinet piece. Our storefront has more decanters, cordial sets and barware, and we are glad to help you find the right pieces for a bar cart. ~ Maxwell
