A magnificent, investment-grade monumental studio art pottery floor vase standing an imposing 29 inches tall. This exceptional museum-quality piece was hand-thrown on a potter's wheel and intricately carved in 1979 by celebrated second-generation master potter James "Kimbo" Dryden at the historic Dryden Pottery studio in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Design & Aesthetic:
This architectural statement piece perfectly captures the organic, earth-toned Brutalist and Mid-Century Modern design aesthetics of the late 1970s. The elongated neck features fine, hand-incised vertical sgraffito and gridded patterns that transition seamlessly into a heavily dimpled, pebbled textured body. The vessel is finished with a striking, high-gloss rich caramel and deep espresso-brown glaze contrast that beautifully highlights the hand-carved textures.
Materials & Provenance:
The unglazed bottom features the authentic, hand-incised signature of the artist: "JK Dryden / original / 79". Notably, Dryden Pottery is famous for being the only studio in the world to blend local Arkansas novaculite (a durable quartz stone native to the Ouachita Mountains) directly into their proprietary clay bodies and glazes. This gives this massive piece incredible structural integrity, weight, and a highly durable finish.
