Antique Blown & Cut Flint Glass Covered Compote, Probably Pittsburgh, Circa 1840s
A graceful antique American covered compote of blown, hand-cut flint glass, probably made in Pittsburgh in the 1840s. The conical bowl is cut with arched panels and a faceted band at the base. The matching lid has a flat flange rim and panel-cut sides, and it is topped with a faceted finial. It stands on a plain stem and a broad, flat foot.
The heavy, clear metal and crisp cutting catch the light beautifully. At over 9" tall, it’s a substantial piece for a mantel, sideboard, or dining table, and it works as a candy dish or a centerpiece. Covered compotes are harder to find than open ones, and this one still has its original fitted lid.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. No chips or cracks. Small inclusion in the glass from production is present in the bowl wall.
Dimensions: 7" diameter x 9 1/4" H overall (with lid)
